Chonk Magazine

Chonk Magazine is a monthly publication that celebrates "chonky" or plump cats. Each month a diffferent "Chonk" is featured on the cover. In April, of 2020, the featured cat was named, Ponyo. Ponyo is a short-haired orange and white tabby cat that is extremely affectionate. Here he is caught in a moment of yearning for cuddles with his owner.

About the cover design: I used a semi-transparent white frame to draw your eye inward towards the cat. This frame also gives the cover a dimensional look. Drop shadows and overlapping elements add depth as well. To keep a cohesive color scheme I pulled colors from the blurred areas of the image to use a text backgrounds. Adding these color containers helped to keep the text readable against the busy background of the image. The wood grain of the credenza, the pebbles in the vase, the jute wrapped décor, and the organic foliage all add texture and provide visual interest to the background. For this reason, I chose not to Photoshop the cat completely out of his environment instead to add a blur so that the focus remain on the feline.
